Young Programmers at Showroom Cinema

Posted 18 August 2023

Ever wondered who decides what films are shown on the big screen? Over the past year, a group of passionate, film-loving young people between the ages of 18-25, who make up Showroom Cinema’s Young Programmers, have been learning all about this role in order to take over the cinema with their own favourites.

A film programmer is a person who selects the films that play at the cinema. At Showroom, for example, this means deciding which new releases will appeal to our audiences, and which classic films to bring back at what time. Amongst other things, a film programmer also spends time organising events such as Q&A’s, introductions, and panel discussions that make a visit to our cinema extra special.

The Showroom Young Programmers have been taking part in monthly workshops where they learn more about this role and other jobs behind the scenes of an independent cinema, to inspire and assist with planning screenings and events of their own.

This year so far, they have selected an assortment of films that represent their diverse taste and interests, with a focus on indie, classic, and cult cinema. The Young Programmers have offered rare opportunities to see films such as The Nice Guys, Velvet Goldmine, and Woman in the Dunes, amongst others, and shared their knowledge and insight with fascinating introductions explaining what makes their selections so special.

The final two selections of the current Young Programmers cohort represent two completely different aspects of their interests, but each offers an exciting and unique night out at the cinema!

On Friday 25 August, the group will present Martin Scorsese’s underappreciated After Hours on a classic 35mm film print. Before the screening, members of the group will impart their knowledge of Scorsese, ready for the release of his epic new film Killers of the Flower Moon in October.

On Saturday 9 September, the cinema will be taken over by vampires for a nostalgic trip to Forks, Washington for the much-loved teen romance Twilight. The evening will feature interactive elements, themed drinks and décor, and dress up is encouraged! And don’t forget to pledge allegiance to Team Edward or Team Jacob.

If you want to see more screenings like these, or you or a young person you know would like to get involved in Showroom’s film programme, keep an eye on our website and social media for upcoming announcements, as opportunities coming soon.
