Kathryn Bigelow returns with her first film offering since Zero Dark Thirty. Centred around the 1967 Detroit riots: one of the most brutal and violent periods of civil unrest that highlighted the fierce racial prejudice rife in the city’s police force. In the midst of the riots, a group of young black men and women sought refuge in the Algiers Motel, but their night took a dark turn when the motel is raided by the national guard and accompanying police, leading to the deaths of three black men.
Based on the true story of ‘The Algiers Motel Incident’, Detroit is a telling and poignant film that rings all too familiar 50 years on. With a strong cast of up-and-coming young actors including Star Wars alum John Boyega, Will Poulter (The Revenant) and Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker).
