David Byrne’s feature film is a colourful, eccentric, and compelling exploration of small-town America. A love letter to ordinary people and the strangeness that makes up everyday life, True Stories follows the fictional town of Virgil, Texas, as they prepare for a “Celebration of Specialness”.

The film radiates warmth and humour, thanks, in part, to incredible and sincere performances by Byrne and John Goodman. Ed Lachman’s cinematography is surreal and vibrant, reflecting the gentle satirisation of late capitalist America, and Byrne’s interest in the techno-futurist aesthetic.

The cult classic combines music from the Talking Heads album of the same name, with an offbeat mockumentary style of filmmaking. True Stories combines music and humour for an optimistic, joyous film watching experience.

Selected by the Showroom Young Programmers, this screening will feature a short introduction and be followed by a Karaoke Party in the Showroom Café Bar!
