Young Programmers Takeover: Kes PG
Showroom Young Programmers return with another fabulous special screening, selecting Ken Loach’s evergreen classic Kes to return to the big screen.
The acclaimed and beloved British drama focuses on Billy Casper (David Bradley in a mesmerising performance), a tormented working-class boy subjected to abuse both at school and at home. The son of a single mother (Lynne Perrie), Billy's existence is mostly bleak until he takes up an interest in falconry and begins training a kestrel that he finds on a nearby farm. While Billy forms a close bond with the falcon, his hardscrabble life and harsh environment prove to be a challenge to the boy and his bird.
A timeless masterwork of British cinema that has captured the hearts of generations over the last 50 years, Showroom Young Programmers are proud to present this iconic work of British Social Realism and introduce it to the next generation of cinemagoers.
This film will include an intro by our Showroom Young Programmers. This screening will be followed by a pre-recorded Q&A with Professor David Forrest, lecturer in Film and Television Studies at the University of Sheffield. His research concerns questions of class and region in British film, television and literature, with a particular focus on social realism. He is currently at work on a volume of the BFI Film Classics series on Kes.
